The event was well attended, almost 100 people. The feeling generated was one of great fun, appreciation and a terrific sense of community.

Part of the event included a writing workshop led by Joan Logghe, an illustrating project by Jerry Wellman and speed haiku led by Ellen Zeiselman.

These images are some of the images illustrating haiku from the book, made during the illustration workshop.
On September 25 Axle Contemporary celebrates the completion of our Haiku Roadsign project at the New Mexico Museum of Art. The Museum will host a poetry reading and booksigning for our first publication, Haiku Roadsign. Most of the 32 poets selected for the project will be present to read their work. The freshly minted 80-page color book with essays by Axle Contemporary, Santa Fe Poet Laureate Joan Logghe, and NMMA curator of contemporary art Laura Addison, will be available for purchase as well as t-shirts, posters, and buttons. Images include all 32 haiku on the sign, photographed in locations throughout Santa Fe, from Old Pecos Trail to Cerrillos Road, from Sawmill Road to Guadalupe Street, The Plaza, and many points in between.

In addition we will have Haiku writing activities in the museum galleries in response to art in the current exhibitions, as well as drawing activities in response to the poems from the Haiku Roadsign project. The Axle Contemporary mobile gallery will be parked in front of the museum on Palace Avenue with our Harvest exhibition throughout the afternoon.

Participatory activities in the galleries begin at 1:00 pm.
Reading and booksigning in the central courtyard at 2:00 pm.
Admission and activities are free to all New Mexico residents.
All activities and poetry reading are free with museum admission.

The Haiku Roadsign project poets are: Debbie Adams, Burning Books, John Brandi, Lauren Camp, Seth T. Cohen, Deborah A.

The Haiku Roadsign project, which the book documents, is a 16-week long art and poetry installation produced by Axle Contemporary. In April, we put out a statewide call to New Mexico writers to submit their short, 3-line haiku poems for consideration. We worked with Joan Logghe, Santa Fe’s Poet Laureate to select 32 haiku from the 230 poems submitted by 100 writers. Since early June, our portable roadsign has been on the streets of Santa Fe, in a new location and with new poems each week. Haiku printed on paper, collected in a book, evoke the rich experience that can be gained from taking notice of our environment. A poem broadcast on a roadside sign is distinctly different. Reading a haiku while hurtling through space in a car or on a bicycle, while feeling, hearing, and smelling the road, might be more shocking, unexpected, immediate and reverberating.Axle Contemporaryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04575523281756555574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2339118865371091748.post-58323434800430396722011-09-19T20:59:00.000-07:002011-09-19T20:59:42.677-07:00Week 16, Moeller and WilsonAt Los Chile Bros, Cerrillos Road (by Big Lots)
